Battlestar Galactica Locations Guide: Good Hunting!

Picture
Navigating: This guide is most easily searched using the categories on the right hand side of the page. You can search by episode title, season or movie, location in British Columbia, fictitious planet (i.e., Kobol, New Caprica, etc.), or often-used location (i.e., Simon Fraser University).

You can also use episode screen captures to help you navigate by clicking on the menu at the top of the page and going to whichever season/movie you would like to see. There, simply click on the screen capture or the episode title to see filming locations from that episode.

For each episode, you will find a locations list, a Google Map of each public location, and a gallery with either screen matched photos, if we were able to travel there or knew someone who did, or relevant screen captures. You can click on gallery photos to see larger versions. Travel tips and location information are also provided.

Trip Planning: If you are planning your own scouting trip to the Vancouver area, it can be helpful to search using the cities listed in the categories. For example, there are a lot of locations quite close together in North Vancouver, so searching by this category will help you plan a fun day which minimizes the time you have to spend in your car driving to locations. Searching by 'Downtown Vancouver' can help you plan a great walking tour as well.

Additional Resources: On the trip resources page you can download a PDF document containing all public locations with addresses (organized by season), a Google Earth KMZ file containing placemarks for each of these locations, and view essential travel tips. There is also a links page leading to other resources around the 'net.

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll help you as best we can.

Most of all, enjoy the guide! There are many happy memories for us here, and it was a blast to put together.

Battlestar Galactica is the property of NBC/Universal. All screen captures provided by frak-that.com. If you use photos from www.battlestarlocations.com, please credit us and include a link to our site.

Bottom of the hill, Tidewater Way, Lions Bay, BC
Travel Tips: A total of three different houses were used as Baltar's house over the course of the series. This created some hilarity as Anne and I were travelling. During our first visit to Lions Bay in 2010, we had the fun of trying to figure out which house was Baltar's. We felt we might have found it when we saw the house, pictured above, at the bottom of the hill (to the right of public parking). Then, when we saw the house at the top of the hill from the beach, we considered ourselves idiots for even considering the first house.

It turns out that we were doubly right! The house at the bottom of the hill was used for the Miniseries only. It's gated, but can be seen from the public parking lot. The house on the hill was used for the bulk of the series (with the exception of Daybreak). That house was one designed by the same architect as the house on the hill, but is located in West Vancouver.

Park in the public lot near the water (click on the adjacent map to see a larger view). Many of the parking spots are labelled 'residents with permits', but there are visitor spots.  Use the public beach access to view the house from the series. Please note that the area near the beach access is a tow-away zone.

Near the washrooms is a raised grassy area where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the house and the water, perfect for a picnic (we've had two--one on each trip :D). Even the drive from Vancouver is amazing (~35 min), with a postcard view around every turn.

Maxine's - 1215 Bidwell Street, Vancouver
Location Notes: Maxine's was used for the interior of the Picon Harbor Bar, the Blue Moon (where we see Ellen talking to Cavil). You can find an article on Maxine's here: Picon Harbor Bar. As of July 2013, this building has been  torn down in favor of a 21-story apartment building.  Thanks to Jennifer Becker for letting us know about this location, and David Cook for the update.

Justice Institute, Maple Ridge, Restricted Access.
The Syfy Network has a great video of this location and the rebel base: Location, Location, Location.
Location Notes: Henry and Darren at the Justice Institute were invaluable in helping us with this location. We were offered the opportunity to photograph at the site, but were unable to fit it into our trip due to time constraints. I sent Darren some screencaps and he generously went out to the site and took these pics for us. Thanks, guys!

Wooded area, Capilano Park, 3735 Capilano Road,
North Vancouver
Travel Tips: This was used in a flashback sequence to 'Lay Down Your Burdens.' There is also a flashback to these woods in Robert Burnaby Park in 'The Farm.'  More information is available for this park under the category 'The Farm.'

For this location, park in the Cleveland Dam parking lot. You'll be able to see 'The Lions,' the mountains used as the 'Gates of Hera' in the Kobol arc from there. Cross the Cleveland Dam bridge (another site from 'The Plan') and you'll see a path on the left leading up. Walk up the path. Right about where it begins to turn, you'll see a wooden post with a small yellow sign on it. Enter the woods here (there's an obvious path).

We found screen matching in this park very difficult (though we believe we were successful with a few Kobol shots).  Did you have luck matching? Please contact us and share your pics and stories.

The Northlawn Building (part of Riverview Hospital), 2601 Lougheed Highway, Coquitlam, BC.
The Syfy Network has a great video of this location and the Cylon Base: Location, Location, Location.
Travel Tips: As the original resistance base from 'The Farm' had been demolished, production moved to The Northlawn Building (on the grounds of Riverview Hospital--Kara's hospital from 'The Farm'). It was difficult to match the building as many production shots were taken from well above, but the shots here are of the correct location. The actual area that was used is fenced in and locked.

We passed Riverview Hospital on our way to the Breeder's Canyon site in Coquitlam. Traffic can be bad here, so we'd suggest going on a weekday. This location used to be a mental institution and is now used exclusively for filming. A security vehicle drove the grounds when we were there. We didn't make any effort to hide what we were doing, and the driver simply smiled and waved at us as he drove by.

Simon Fraser University, entrance is where Burnaby Mountain Parkway meets Gaglardi Way.
Simon Fraser Campus Map
Travel Tip: An absolute do not miss location in Burnaby, Simon Fraser University appears in many episodes. Finding a map on campus can be difficult, so use an online map like the one at the beginning of this post to help you plot your route through campus (or bring it up on your phone while you're there). This was a flashback sequence in 'The Plan.' The exact shot is likely to the right of ours.

Cleveland Dam Bridge, Capilano Park, 3735 Capilano Road,
North Vancouver
Picture
The Cleveland Dam bridge at Capilano Park.
Travel Tips: When you get to Capilano Park, park in the Cleveland Dam parking lot (click the adjacent pic to enlarge). From there, you'll be able to see the Lions Mountains (from the Kobol arc). The bridge used in 'The Plan' takes you directly across the dam. The view and the sound there is amazing. If you continue across the bridge and up the gravel path, you'll be able to visit the Cylon missile site from Kobol as well. Just walk up the path and right about where it begins to turn you'll see a wooden post with a small, yellow sign on it. Enter the woods here (there's an obvious path).

Mid Valley in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in North Vancouver. Take exit 22 from Hwy 1 at the north end of the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge. A large green GVRD sign at the intersection of the parkway and Lillooet Road points straight ahead on Lillooet to the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (Seymour Demonstration Forest). Click on the maps below to get a closer look.

Help Needed: We cut short our trip to the lookout at Mid Valley, site of the pyramid training camp, as the road to the site was gated and we didn't have time to hike the rest of the way. This location is just down the road from the Stables from 'Hand of God' and is fully public (and reportedly has an amazing view). If you hike up to the site, please contact us and share a pic for the website!
