Filming 'Sometimes A Great Notion'
Paul Yates shadowed director Michael Nankin during the filming of 'Sometimes A Great Notion.' The photos that he shared with us showcase many aspects of the development of this episode--from the concept model for the ruins on Nuked Earth to the school children who gathered to watch Katee Sackhoff and Callum Keith Rennie film a pivotal scene. All photos on this page, including the header, are copyright Paul Yates. Please do not post them elsewhere without his permission.
The Locations
Director Michael Nankin and the production team scout various locations for 'Sometimes A Great Notion.'
From Concept to Set
These photos take us from the original concept for the ruins on Nuked Earth to the building of the actual set on location. The shots in the sunshine were taken before the entire set was destroyed by a hurricane! We've tried to match the concepts with actual location photos below. The set used for filming is the one in evening light.

The gallery below includes photos of Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Kandyse McClure, Alessandro Juliani and director Michael Nankin preparing for scenes on Galactica's sets. We particularly enjoyed the 'respect our sets' signs that reside near the racks!!
The Fox and the Hen House
Wearing a wetsuit under his costume, Michael Hogan ventures into the frigid waters of Boundary Bay.
Filming Kara and Leoben (and Friend) on Location
One of the most pivotal moments in the episode was when Kara found her remains in a burned-out cockpit on Nuked Earth. These shots show Katee Sackhoff and Callum Keith Rennie filming on location at both Boundary Bay and Beach Grove Park.
