It turns out that we were doubly right! The house at the bottom of the hill was used for the Miniseries only. It's gated, but can be seen from the public parking lot. The house on the hill was used for the bulk of the series (with the exception of Daybreak). That house was one designed by the same architect as the house on the hill, but is located in West Vancouver.
Bottom of the hill, Tidewater Way, Lions Bay, BC Travel Tips: A total of three different houses were used as Baltar's house over the course of the series. This created some hilarity as Anne and I were travelling. During our first visit to Lions Bay in 2010, we had the fun of trying to figure out which house was Baltar's. We felt we might have found it when we saw the house, pictured above, at the bottom of the hill (to the right of public parking). Then, when we saw the house at the top of the hill from the beach, we considered ourselves idiots for even considering the first house. Park in the public lot near the water (click on the adjacent map to see a larger view). Many of the parking spots are labelled 'residents with permits', but there are visitor spots. Use the public beach access to view the house from the series. Please note that the area near the beach access is a tow-away zone. Path to view Baltar's house. Photo courtesy of Steve Fenwick. Near the washrooms is a raised grassy area where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the house and the water, perfect for a picnic (we've had two--one on each trip :D). Even the drive from Vancouver is amazing (~35 min), with a postcard view around every turn.

Simon Fraser University, entrance is where Burnaby Mountain Parkway meets Gaglardi Way. Simon Fraser Campus Map Travel Tip: An absolute do not miss location in Burnaby, Simon Fraser University appears in many episodes. Finding a map on campus can be difficult, so use an online map like the one at the beginning of this post to help you plot your route through campus (or bring it up on your phone while you're there). This was a flashback sequence in 'The Plan.' The exact shot is likely to the right of ours.
Mid Valley in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in North Vancouver. Take exit 22 from Hwy 1 at the north end of the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge. A large green GVRD sign at the intersection of the parkway and Lillooet Road points straight ahead on Lillooet to the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (Seymour Demonstration Forest). Click on the maps below to get a closer look. Help Needed: We cut short our trip to the lookout at Mid Valley, site of the pyramid training camp, as the road to the site was gated and we didn't have time to hike the rest of the way. This location is just down the road from the Stables from 'Hand of God' and is fully public (and reportedly has an amazing view). If you hike up to the site, please contact us and share a pic for the website! This episode has two locations. 1. Forest where Helo shoots a Six Lynn Canyon Park, 3663 Park Road in Lynn Valley Take a virtual tour at the Lynn Canyon Park website. Google Earth map provided by Kent Sponagle. Find the gravel access road that runs through Lynn Canyon Park and follow it to the south end of the Bear Trail. Helo shot a Six here (it's also the main Kobol campsite). Matching this site in the park seemed near impossible, so the match above is similar at best. Did you have better luck? Please contact us with stories and photos! On our first visit, we walked the Bear Trail (having asked at the Ecology Centre where productions usually film in the park) and, ironically enough, heard a very loud bear call at the bottom of the trail. I only knew what it was for sure because it sounded like Chewbacca, and I knew they used some bear sounds for him (I'm not particularly outdoorsy, lol). We made a lot of noise talking and jingling keys and high tailed it out of there! Especially if you're visiting on a weekday, when the park is not busy, consider bear bells or some other noise maker. 2. Baltar's house Tidewater Way, Lions Bay Travel Tips: Baltar's house at Lions Bay is another location not to be missed. Park in the public lot near the water, and use the public beach access. Don't be like us and spend at least half an hour taking pictures of the water, ourselves and the water, the rocks, ourselves and the rocks, and not notice the house behind you! Near the washrooms is a raised grassy area where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the house and the water, perfect for a picnic. (We've had two--one on each trip. :D) Even the ~35-minute drive from Vancouver is amazing--with a postcard view around every turn. This episode has two locations. 1. The access road to the park is from the Upper levels Highway (routes 1 and 99) in West Vancouver. From the city of Vancouver, access is by crossing the Lions Gate Bridge to the Upper Levels Highway via Taylor Way in West Vancouver. Map of Cypress Provincial Park Help Needed: We've not been to Cypress Provincial Park. Looking at the map (the link above), the Quarry picnic area may be located by Quarry Lookout. Locations can often be found off main roads very close to the entrance of parks (production needs easy access). There is a marked picnic area on the map that is much farther into the park. Did you make this trip? Please contact us to share your stories and pics for the site! This episode has three locations. 1. Zak's Funeral Mountainview Cemetery, north of 33 Avenue, Vancouver Travel Tip: The location is just north of 33 Avenue. The lower photos were provided by the 13th Colony and were taken from camera positions used in the show. We didn't have a chance to visit this site, but from Google Earth, it seems possible to check it out without disturbing the cemetery at all. 2. Caprican 'Air Force' Base Location Notes: The exteriors where Adama meets Kara for the first time were filmed on the lot at Vancouver Film Studios. 3. Helo and Sharon Bomb Shelter The Alibi Room, 157 Alexander Street, Vancouver Travel Tips: The Alibi Room is located in Gastown, a hip shopping and lifestyle neighbourhood that offers 'the complete Vancouver experience.' It was cool to be able to sit and eat on a 'set' from the show. The Alibi Room offers a wide selection of beer--my 'maple beer' unfortunately tasted like someone had squeezed Aunt Jemima directly into a pilsner, but perhaps you will make a better choice. The shopping and architecture in the area are great!
This episode has two locations. 1. Sharon and Helo on the Bridge/Sex Scene Harbourview Park. The best access is by parking at Pet Smart, 1302 Cotton Drive, North Vancouver Check out the story of the 13th Colony visiting this site on their blog. Google Earth map courtesy of Kent Sponagle. Travel Tips: The bridge and the sex scene were filmed in Harbourview Park. The bridge is currently being reconstructed, so there may be no reason to visit. Please contact us if you have any recent information. Thanks to the 13th Colony for the amazing pics! 2. Helo/Sharon at stable North Shore Equestrian Centre, 1301 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, close to Capilano University North Shore Equestrian Centre Website Travel Tips: This is a private business, but very welcoming to visitors. Use the website above to contact the owners before you go. When planning a trip to North Vancouver, click on its category on the right to see all the locations you can visit. The sites here are within minutes of each other. 2. Six on the Gravel Road Inter River Park (visible from the Equestrian Centre), North Vancouver Travel Tip: This site is visible from the Equestrian Centre, virtually from where Sharon was using her binoculars. It has changed somewhat over the years (now paved instead of gravel). To get a better match to the screencap, you would have to go to the park. 3. Baltar's House Tidewater Way, Lions Bay Travel Tips: Baltar's house at Lions Bay is another location not to be missed. Park in the public lot near the water, and use the public beach access. Lee and his fiancée The Waterfall Building, 1540 West 2nd Avenue, Vancouver Travel Tips: Used in many episodes, The Waterfall Building was where you see Lee with his fiancée Gianne in the flashback sequences in Black Market. Parking is an issue--there is a gravel pay lot just across from the building that is best. There is also, appropriately, a Starbucks nearby!
